Hi all,
Am excited to meet you all and explore with you a course so fundamental to how we should/could/must navigate our relationships with each other. Looking forward to class Wednesday September 3 at 9:30 AM in Allard 122. I do a very traditional first class taking you through the basics of how the course is set up, what’s on this website and how to use it. etc. You have nothing to prepare or read.
For Friday’s class please watch or listen to appellant argument before the Supreme Court in Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia (heard Feb. 25, 2025) from start to 1:04:00 at https://www.scc-csc.ca/cases-dossiers/search-recherche/41061/ (video) or https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/kuldeep-kaur-ahluwalia-v-amrit-pal-singh-ahluwalia/id1592442126?i=1000696442915 (Apple podcast). Do not approach this case by second-guessing or overthinking the law. Approach it as the real human you are: What did you find interesting? What bothered you? What puzzled you? You may find that making notes of your immediate reactions as you watch or listen is helpful. Also, if you find yourself genuinely fascinated, there is no reason you have to stop at an hour and four minutes, but that is totally up to you. Nothing will be lost pedagogically speaking IMHO if you stop at the Court’s morning break (1:04:00).
My office hours will be Wednesdays, 1:00 – 4:00 PM. That said, you will be able to find me in Room 457 a lot of the time. So feel free to drop by and come in if the door is even slightly open. If I’m there and the door is closed, I’m probably on a call or a Zoom.
Consider me truly interested in who you are and why you chose law. So also please feel free to drop me an email to festinger@allard.ubc.ca to tell me a bit about yourself, your background, what you hope to get out of law school etc. If you are so inclined, I always love hearing about your streaming/music/book/podcast/etc. recommendations.
Looking forward to getting to know you as a class, and individually.
Jon
